The term green lifestyle, Eco living, or sustainable development had actually been practiced since long time ago in traditional settlements across Indonesia. Many studies had confirmed that vernacular housing adapts well to local climate and environment and combined with traditional culture that emphasized harmony with nature produced an ecologically responsible community. Although eroded by globalization, recently the “back to nature” trends also promote traditional housing and culture. If traditional housing and culture supports sustainability, why not revive them?
This study tries to see whether reviving traditional settlements and culture can promote sustainability in this modern age and what the impacts of a revival project on the environment. The project of Betawi Cultural Village in Setu Babakan, Jakarta is analyzed through field observation and in-depth interviews. Another similar cultural village, Kampung Naga also viewed as comparison. The result shows that not all aspect from traditional culture still applicable in this modern age and aspects of the revival project that cause positive and negative impacts on the ecological environment are described.
