Due to increased number of population and the decrease of land plots in Indonesia, currently resulted in the increase of land price and value. Besides the problem of decrease land plots, the government also faced problem lack of infrastructures to support the increased number of cars and other vehicles. As a result, public spaces development has been abandoned in favor of infrastructure development.
This is also worsening with the facts that numbers of public spaces in cities around Indonesia has not being able to support the adequate ratio with the growing population.
There are several attempts by the government to try and coupe with the issue, either by strict regulation, reclaiming land plots in the center of the cities to be converted as public spaces permanently, and temporary converting infrastructure to become public spaces.
Car Free Day (CFD) is an attempt to temporarily increase the number of public spaces in cities in Indonesia by blocking vehicles and other means of transportation into several major roads in the city. Then by quarantining the road, citizens can temporary used it as public spaces for an amount of time. This phenomenon was started in Jakarta, and now due to its popularity has been implemented in several cities around Indonesia, including Bandung.
This paper will try to discuss about the CFD phenomenon, how it is initiated; what is the initial expectation; the current state of CFD itself; and the future of CFD viewed from the citizen perspective. For this research we took the sample from the city of Bandung, and we will try and find answers using qualitative and quantitative approach. The result of this study is expected to give a better understanding about the phenomenon and its future implementation.
